It starts off rather slowly, but it ends very powerfully. Be prepared to sit still and enjoy!

Outstanding drama with remarkable performances from everyone in the cast. Robert Duvall gives one of his best performances, Olga Bellin reminds me of Geraldine Page and she is terrific. Sudie Bond is great in a supporting role. Brilliantly directed, it has a great feel to it. The cinematography is excellent.

Stark black and white cinematography gives this film a timeless feeling... Beautiful acting by Duvall.

I didn't see this until 36 years after it was first made. The kindness and gentleness of Robert Duvall's character was touching.

my favourite movie of all time. It brought me to my knees when I first saw it. Such a magnificent prtrayal by Robert Duvall and a look at life in the South back then.
