Two out-of-work actors -- the anxious, luckless Marwood and his acerbic, alcoholic friend, Withnail -- spend their days drifting between their squalid flat, the unemployment office and the pub. When they take a holiday "by mistake" at the country house of Withnail's flamboyantly gay uncle, Monty, they encounter the unpleasant side of the English countryside: tedium, terrifying locals and torrential rain.

The funniest movie about friendship ever made. Plus has a large upper class poof sporting a radish as a button hole. Fantastic. "As a youth I used to weep in butcher's shops"

It's hard to sell this quirky one-off to anybody.The plot as such is 2 out of work actors who share a shabby flat.They try to keep warm,drink,then wait for the next Giro..that's it!But it is so idiosyncratic and funny with almost every line of dialogue quotable...I demand some booze!...Ponce!...Scrubbers!...Monty,you utter cunt!...Don't threaten me with a dead fish!...the squalid kitchen sink...the fucker will rue the day!

Funny as hell. Gets better as I get older and more distant from the painful but hilarious poverty it basically makes fun of.

What a film!, very quotable. Clearly was an accidental success which makes it even better. Richard E Grant is superb, though in truth he has never had a part anywhere near this since....shame. Total classic, can watch this any time.

There is only one word to describe this movie: Perfect! The dialogue is fantastic, the acting is flawless, a brilliant story, it is hard to fault this film!
