Enormously different from the Universal film, and delightfully so as the emphasis is placed far more on the Doctor Frankenstein himself (the creature doesn't even appear until halfway into the film). This version of Frankenstein is cold and twisted, willing to do anything and use (or even kill) anyone in his quest to create the perfect artificial being. Peter Cushing is wonderfully evil as the Doctor, making him practically unrecognisable from the heroic Van Helsing of the Dracula films. While the film overall isn't as iconic as the Universal film, it is still not to be missed.

Wonderful! What makes this a cut above is that it's not just the story of the making of a monster, but of the unmaking of a friendship. Of work that gets in the way of relationships, of principles that cloud judgment. Paul and Victor both bore responsibility for what happened in some fashion. Though Victor did seem, from the beginning, to have been missing some empathy. Perhaps he was on the autism spectrum.

Still an impressive movie after all these years and the film that made Hammer Films a household name for horror fans all over the world. Peter Cushing's terrific performance dominates the film as his character goes through the transformation from curious scientist to an obsessive fiend. Lee creates a terrifying monster who still demands the viewers sympathy. This may not be Hammer's best film, but its importance cannot be over-estimated putting the studio on the map and creating the enduring partnership of two very fine actors.

A very different take on the book, with Victor portrayed as a more blatantly terrible, arrogant scientist with no regard for any life other than that which he creates. In that regard, it reflects the character better than in most versions, and Peter Cushing does a great job in the role. It has some lush color cinematography and a more accurate period setting, but I prefer the expressionist black and white look of the Universal version. The construction of the creature and his make up are far more gruesome and disgusting than in any other version, which is pretty impressive for a movie that's 50 years old. This was probably the most important and influential of the Hammer horror films, but not my favorite.

Typical Hammer adaptation of the Frankenstein story. I don't mean that as an insult either. What I love bout 60s Hammer films is that they were afraid to make their films take place in a different century (unlike now with our crap Dracula 2000 and such). Peter Cushing is good... sometimes laughable as he tends to overact. Christopher Lee looks amazing as the monster despite some obvious makeup lines are easily seen. Some shots are really good, but most of the time your shouting at the characters doing something incredibly dumb, but isnt that what horror films are all about. It's a great Halloween season movie.
