Peter Cushing is so watchable. He poured it all into every role. Just watch his blood transfusion scene.

The Curse of Frankenstein preserves the Victorian feel of Mary Shelley's novel, but it deviates even further from its source material than the famous James Whale film. This version of Victor Frankenstein, played by Peter Cushing, is a morally unsound man who willfully murders a man in order to obtain a brain for his creature (Christopher Lee). Although his friend Paul (Robert Urquhart) begs him to cease bringing life to the dead, Frankenstein is obsessively undeterred and will dispose of anyone who stands in his way. The great cast is augmented by vivid sets, wonderful costumes, and a disturbing make-up job for the monster. This success of this film spurred Hammer Studios to shoot a large number of horror films, but this one is probably one of their finest products.

This is the one that started it all for Hammer. It wisely ignores most of the original story and does it's own thing, establishing a premise that's pretty much like Stuart Gordon's Reanimator. No bad thing. This has great performances from everyone, especially Peter Cushing, and fantastic monster makeup. It works even today, so when it was released it really pushed the boundaries for horror. Doesn't outstay it's welcome and it's no surprise at all that they made a hell of a lot more of them based on the quality of this installment. Hugely enjoyable.

Christopher Lee as Frankenstein's Creature? You can't go wrong with that.

This was much better than I thought it would be (not to mention much better than the version with Kenny Branagh, though it's hard to imagine). Though the movie poster makes it look quite ridiculous. It wasn't really scary at all, but it was kind of depressing. Christopher Lee made me sad.
