The Age of Shadows is perhaps too long, but there's no doubt that it is a sumptuous, elegantly crafted piece of cinema.

Tense, full of great performances, and with a nice theme of ambiguity, The Age of Shadows is s sure fire winner. The acting is top notch, and the Resistance decides to the ballsiest move of all, turn a spy who is sent to infiltrate their ranks. The musical score heightens the mood, and its equal parts Inglourious Basterds in terms of spurts of violence and suspense. The game cast does well so this thriller soars.

It's all wonderfully stylish and handsome - the train sequence in particular may send some viewers into an aesthetic swoon - but it's also a bit stately, which isn't great for sustaining intrigue and/or tension.

In all, Kim Jee-woon may be a filmmaker not best-known for emotional subtlety, but with the right material he knows how to deliver the goods.
