From the director of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon comes this fantastic movie, based in Shanghai in WW2 this film is an intense combination of thrills, passion, drama and pure lust. An excellent story line with some brilliant acting, an emotional rollercoaster. Top Stuff.

Maybe not as resonant as 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' or 'Brokeback Mountain,' but its story is a bit more complicated. Ang Lee delivers yet another intricate and unexpected romance (if you dare to call it that), and it's tragic as always. It's completely compelling and that's due in particular to Tang Wei's stunning performance and the always splendid Tony Leung. The much-talked about sex scenes are essential, beautifully shot and surprisingly powerful, but then again so are the scenes where characters play mahjong.

Beautiful, fascinating, powerful, frustrating. A complex, deep, multi-layered film that really could do with a second viewing. At the time it felt too long and slow but looking back I can understand why. The sex scenes are remarkable - especially as they force you to focus on their emotional subtexts, rather than their action.
