The consequences on a neighborhood from an unjust shooting, with no obvious answers or simplicity. Three men are affected, each with a choice which could knock them out of their complacency and into action, or activism. The movie is told in three acts, and they are only really connected by the shooting. Anthony Ramos, for instance, disappears just as you're wondering what will happen to him. The opening scene, with John David Washington getting pulled over for no reason, is absolutely perfect tension, as is the scene when Kelvin Harrison is searched on his way home from practice.

Turning black-white conflict into a laudably complex wash of gray, Mr. Green (inspired in part by a conversation he had with a police officer about the 2014 death of Eric Garner) favors reason over outrage. The political heat rises but the movie stays cool, its smooth, smart climax in keeping with its levelheaded tone.

'Monsters and Men' will go down as a Black Lives Matter film that upended the format and presented us with a direct mirror as to what black and brown folks feel during this pivotal and crucial time in our society.

Green, as writer and director, takes on a police shooting from several different angles. Each is fascinating and powerful on their own, and together the results are shattering.
