Not a bad 70's movie. Dustin Hoffman (with some overly distracting teeth caps) plays an ex-con who can't seem to go straight and narrow. Theresa Russell, Gary Busey, Kathy Bates (!!) and, in a very Harry-Dean-Stanton performance, Harry Dean Stanton are all in for the ride. Bonus props for the kid they hired to play Gary Busey's kid.

Text book 70's crime caper, staring Dustin Hoffman as the ex-con trying to go straight. A strong supporting cast in Kathy Bates, Gary Busey and Theresa Russell. Hoffman's unbelievable performances is nicely complimented by Harry Dean Stanton as the veteran bank robber and M. Emmet Walsh as the cunt of a parole officer.

(****): Thumbs Up Hoffman is great here and I also loved Walsh's slimy performance. A fantastic film.

That's what I call a fucking movie. You Know. It's not "profoundly" directed, but it's directed right and adequate. There are shots in this film that are beautiful just because of how great they fit in, and stand out at the same time. I've never even heard of Uli Grosbard before, but I'd love to see more by him. The script also really gave something too. Making crime out to be like a drug. And just playing everything well. Let's of course not forget fucking Dustin Hoffman, who WAS Max Dembo, and really shows how talented he is as an actor. Do yourself and favor and see this, and love it.

Gene Siskel picked this as his favourite film of 1978, and it is probably the best Dustin Hoffman film that people overlook. Excellent character study and performances, though Therea Russells character is a bit of a cypher.
