Gods and Monsters (1998)

It's 1957, and James Whale's heyday as the director of "Frankenstein," "Bride of Frankenstein" and "The Invisible Man" is long behind him. Retired and a semi-recluse, he lives his days accompanied only by images from his past. When his dour housekeeper, Hannah, hires a handsome young gardener, the flamboyant director and simple yard man develop an unlikely friendship, which will change them forever.

Great bio-pic, slightly fictionalized, that tells of the twilight months of a once-great director beset with illness... It works on a few good levels... Bio pic, love letter to old Hollywood, and a study in loneliness and the people that are there to help us out...

A brilliant film. Ian McKellan is a brilliant actor, and this is probably one of his best films. The story is also incredibly interesting and hooks you till the end. Brendan Fraser also gives an amazing performance showing that he not only capable of performing in comedies or action films. With a rich script and a great cast this film viewed with a mature eye definitely impresses.

This film shows that the titans of Hollywood were unable to deal with open Homosexuals upon the onset of the depression and sound films. It amazing how little times have changed since 1932.
