Gods and Monsters (1998)

It's 1957, and James Whale's heyday as the director of "Frankenstein," "Bride of Frankenstein" and "The Invisible Man" is long behind him. Retired and a semi-recluse, he lives his days accompanied only by images from his past. When his dour housekeeper, Hannah, hires a handsome young gardener, the flamboyant director and simple yard man develop an unlikely friendship, which will change them forever.

A phenomenal film surrounding the life of James Whale who directed two of the most important films in cinema history, FRANKENSTEIN and BRIDE of FRANKENSTEIN. It was ahead of it's time in its fearlessness to address Whale's homosexuality and was one of most touching films I've seen in a very long time. It was a very welcomed cry and a beautiful film that, in my opinion, is also one of the best in cinema history.

Brendan Fraser's best performance ever. Every award this film got was so deserved. This was on of the first movies that brought Ian McKellen to my attention.

The role Ian McKellan was born to play; the elderly director of Frankenstein and the Bride of Frankenstein, yet was more like the old blind hermit, waiting for a companion.

An insightful discovery to the heart of a great artist. Subtle script by Bill Condon that links up the works and the man. Ian McKellen's most significant acting by far.

Despite being rather dramatized, I was particularly impressed by Condon's writing and McKellen's performance.
