Archie Lee Meighan is a failing cotton gin owner who is married to Baby Doll, a 19-year old childlike beauty whose father arranged the marriage for financial reasons. As Archie awaits the arrival of Baby Doll's 20th birthday, the day that they are supposed to consummate their marriage, he faces interference from business rival Silva Vacarro, who plots to seduce Baby Doll away from Meighan.

not among my favorite elia kazan films; thiis an overly acted scorcher of a drama. karl malden is more emotional than ive ever seen him and carol baker is all kinds of sexy. the movie however, starts to drag amongst its own melodrama

Interesting film classic. Silly at times, with great performances by Baker and Wallach. Shows too how something can be sensational and risque in say the 1950s, and be less so over time. The risque factor though is subtle, and not blatent as it may be in more modern films.

Wow, this one really stood out there especially for it's time. It's nearly all dialog which is okay because it is all story! Brilliantly done with over-the-top acting at times adds to my liking!
