One of Ozu's more straight-forward films, the addition of color adds a new sense of style for the director. He is visually unbeatable.

Ozu demonstrates that he can adjust readily with a Technicolor palate to present a warm family drama that moves as steadily as one of his signature trains

Ozu's first color film is full of geometric patterns and red objects dotting shots composed of perfect complementary colors (including kimonos, suits, wallpaper...everything). The plot again focuses on social transitions in Japan with the central character (the father this time) finding it difficult to embrace the change away from "arrangement marriage" when it comes to his own daughter (although he is much more liberal when counseling other friends' daughters). Sublime.

I found this to be really delightful personally. It was really a joy to see this film in colour, where Ozu, a master, is doing the same topic over again but always with a new dimension. It's like inventing colour, by some obscure mixture of colours and I'll be damned If I see amything like what Ozu does.

it's not as strong as most ozu films, and I did find it hard to take certain dramatic scenes seriously, me being so far removed from the social context. but it certainly was very enjoyable.
