Ozu's first color film brings with it a deft light touch, delightful humor, and the right decision to let the "kids" take over this time. Ozu segues into modernity much easier than his paternal characters. What a delight. I could see Fred MacMurray starring in an English remake in my perfect world.

A beautiful film. Everything about this film shows a master at work. The acting is impeccable, the cinematography constantly stunning, and the dialog says so much without being obvious or corny. This movie is really a time capsule of Japanese culture in 1958. It's fascinating to watch.

Ozu proves that he can produce something sentimental without being overly syrupy. it isn't a deep story but rather a cute one that is very well executed.

The story is not overly sad or devastating as some of his films prior to "Higanbana", but Ozu's first color film was more of an exercise in the world of color and its use in his films. It is not obvious that this is his first in color, as it is used so well, and extremely meticulously. So is the story worth it? Yes, it's one of Ozu's best films, even though it tackles the age-old story about family life and the father feeling a bit of an outsider in his family. Sounds familiar with so many other Ozu titles, but completely worth the time.
