There is no Indiana Jones to save the day and no pat Hollywood ending to revise history. Voyage of the Damned is unquestionably a serious drama and treats its subject matter with the dignity that it should.

Goodish, and well-intentioned, but not great. Based on a true story, this should be a gut-wrenching emotional roller-coaster ride. The movie feels cold, empty and sterile, despite its subject matter. While we are given glimpses of the despicableness of the Nazi regime, the movie pulls its punches. In place of genuine emotion, we have overwrought sub-plots, and an excess of sub-plots. This makes the movie overly long, without really adding to the drama. Some of the acting is in line with this overwroughtness, being over-acted, almost camp. Not all the performances are so bad, though. Max von Sydow is excellent as the captain. Minor roles include a host of big names: Orson Welles, James Mason, Denholm Elliott, Katharine Ross, Jose Ferrer, Ben Gazzara. Worth watching as a reminder of a dark period in human history, and the lengths of human bigotry.

Based on a shameful true incident that's still not forgotten.

Worth a watch just for the cast list. Although emotive, and detailing an event that should be remembered and studied, this sprawling film seems sometimes trite, lacking the punch and finesse of such examples as Spielbergs Schindlers List. It may be going throught the motions, but there are far worse films out there. Watch out for performances from Max von Sydow, Malcolm McDowell and Malcolm McDowell.

This is a moving that is entertaining, in a rough historical manner, about the social pressures in Nazi Germany. There was no reason that they ship could not have grounded itself in the USA nor in England. As it was the majority (over 600 of the 937 passengers) eventually died during WWII. The idea of mutiny, taking over the ship and turning it due West into the United States shore, thereby grounding it, was the best idea. Once grounded, the lifeboats could have been lowered and the passengers could then land, as refugees. What was lacking was a little bit of good old Israeli determination and willfullness to not allow decisions concerning their people to be made by others. As such, such games as were played then would not be allowed to continue in such manner today. Interesting film, a little melodramatic. NIce to see James Mason, a young Fate Dunnaway and a 30's ambience in this film.
