Shows that not all Germans supported the Nazi party. 1001 movies to see before you die.

Watched this last night on TCM. Great movie and a good reminder, don't let your freedom go.

The full force of Borzage's melodramatic intensity is brought to bear in this, his indictment of early Nazi fanaticism. Did I say melodrama? Thriller is more like it, from the way the Roths are portrayed as a fully honored, well loved family to the gradual, insidious rise of Nazism to the sense of desperation the Roths feel in just trying to survive. A hair-raising experience, and when you look at it in context of fanaticism today--in the Middle East, in American politics, in religions and politics everywhere--it becomes only more relevant.

This is a great movie for any James Stewart or history fan. I happen to be both. He plays a typical good guy who doesn't agree with what Nazi Germany is doing, so he's considered an enemy and him and his family and friends suffer tragedy and persecution because of it.

Romance becomes the irritant and, effectively, Borzage positions his romanticism as a contribution to Hollywood's anti-fascist crusade.
