Two Lovers (1928)

Set during the 16th-century Spanish occupation of Flanders, the story concentrates on the fiercely patriotic Mark Van Ryke (Colman). Donning the guise of "Leatherface," a swashbuckling masked avenger, Van Ryke performs his derring-do on behalf of the Prince of Orange (Nigel de Brulier). Naturally, Van Ruke considers beautiful Spanish aristocrat Donna Leonora de Vargas (Vilma Banky) to be a bitter enemy, and the feeling is mutual. To no one's surprise, however, Van Ryke and Donna Leonara eventually fall in love (hence the title). The pulse-pounding climax finds Van Ryke riding hell-for-leather through a rainstorm to warn the Flemish troops about the Spaniards' plans to burn the city of Ghent to the ground. Two Lovers was based on Madame Orczy's novel Leatherface, and adapted for the screen by Alice Duer Miller.

Joaquin Phoenix and writer-director James Gray team up again for something on a smaller scale, and though the story is no less familiar the results are frequently affecting.

Was it or wasn't he in character on Letterman? Who knows. I missed the appearance but I didn't miss Joaquin Phoenix's performance here. Compelling.

Wanted to dislike this film but was very surprised at how much I love the Phoenix character. NEw York (as it isn't seen in film much anymore) provides a great backdrop to this Boy Meets Two Girls and Screw It Up With Both Of Them romance. Leonard is somewhat f****d up but seems monumentally more so beneath the surface so anything seems possible. At the end though, Gray wisely stays away from all the Movie of the Week possibilities and sticks with a story about how we reconcile what the heart wants and what life offers us.

Two Lovers is about a guy who's very depressed in his life because his fiancée broke up with him, later his parents set him up with a girl who loves him very much but he starts loving his new neighbor. so that's where the movie's title came from. it's a nice movie to watch, with great performances from Joaquin, Gwyneth and Vinessa. i was actually into seeing how the the relationship between each one of them will go. But i wasn't satisfied with how things ended, i mean it seemed like he just settled with the first girl out of sadness so I don't think they'll be happy in the rest of their life. Unfortunately this is supposed to be Joaquin Phoenix last movie since he's focusing on his music career now (too bad because i actually enjoy his movies).
