Nanook of the North (1922)

This pioneering documentary film depicts the lives of the indigenous Inuit people of Canada's northern Quebec region. Although the production contains some fictional elements, it vividly shows how its resourceful subjects survive in such a harsh climate, revealing how they construct their igloo homes and find food by hunting and fishing. The film also captures the beautiful, if unforgiving, frozen landscape of the Great White North, far removed from conventional civilization.

The greatness of this film is how its able to make you identify with Nanook and his family. Their contentment and happiness (yes, it was staged, but the emotions captured are very genuine) despite the harsh conditions they have to live with are endearing and infectious. 'Nanook' died two months after this movie was released, and the news headlined front pages around the world.

Flaherty's classic, influential documentary still fascinates.

Flaherty's great achievement is not documentary objectivity but something else, a sort of reconstructed rawness that illuminates the human struggles and explorations on both sides of the lenses

The interesting thing about silent films is that you can talk through them without missing anything. This one inspired a lot of conversation! I know so little about Eskimos. I was very aware that all the explanations and descriptions were written from a non-Eskimo perspective and I wondered how accurate they were, or if the director just made assumptions based on his own interpretations of the situation. The fact that this film was made so long ago just made it more interesting, because we were not just looking at a very unfamiliar culture, but a very unfamiliar time as well.
