Nanook of the North (1922)

This pioneering documentary film depicts the lives of the indigenous Inuit people of Canada's northern Quebec region. Considered the first documentary, it is undoubtedly one of (if not THE) best. Just incredible, even if (purportedly) staged at points. How many documentaries can hold the attention of a 10-year-old anyway??

How many movies do you get to see about a family of Eskimos? That is what I thought and that is why you should see Nanook of the North. What a masterful documentary filmed in less than ideal conditions. Groundbreaking and if your rent the right version, what a great silent score.

It is a great documentary. Its funny and heart felt and makes you realize what humans are really capable of with so little. Its great for anyone.

Flaherty's great achievement is not documentary objectivity but something else, a sort of reconstructed rawness that illuminates the human struggles and explorations on both sides of the lenses

Amazing documentary made in 1922 following Nanook and his life as an Eskimo. I know some of it was staged, but it was still awesome to watch, because Nanook was still doing the stuff all by himself. It was exciting and intense, I particularly loved the walrus hunt. It was cool seeing him do things like building an igloo or fishing (which was very cool as well). This is an awesome film that flies by
