This is perhaps my favorite Griffith film that Ive seen. There is still some racial stereotypes, but there is some powerful emotion here. And the camera work is flat out amazing here.

The domestic abuse on screen is horrifying and unflinching. Lillian Gish is a revelation, and her ability to convey panic and terror is unrivaled. Featuring detailed and wonderful sets, the contrast between the Chinese apartment with all of it's beautiful furniture and design and the bleak brick wall dungeon of Lucy's home is mesmerizing. The pantomime that the Chinese missionary performs has such natural and eloquent grace. One actually sees the rays of light being sprinkled all over our smile-free heroine and the heart swells with emotion.

This is an amazingly touching story and well-made movie. The music is really fitting to the scenes, and lovely. Lillian Gish is especially good as the 15-year-old girl, even though she was 26 at the time the film was made (according to reports). I recommend this highly!

Perhaps one of the most beautiful films ever made in the history of film. Pivitol to the education of anyone interested in film.

Besides the racism rampant in this critique of racism, it had some beautiful ideas. Gish can be kinda creepy tho:)
