I'm lucky that D. is equally dorky about movies, even though our tastes don't always overlap. For example, Spaghetti Westerns put me to sleep, but I lap up silent films. He only lasted ten minutes with this one. 'Broken Blossoms' -- among the best I've seen (1919 Griffith with Lillian Gish), and kind of like Huck Finn in its dated racism, yet oddly progressive for the time. Fascinating time capsule. 4/5 (minus a point, because, as with just about every movie from the first decade, it has that quality of kids playing around with a toy camera). 100% on RT.

D.W. Griffith and Lilllian Gish confirm their status as THE director and actress of the silent era. Surprisingly forward thinking for the time (though there's still some offensive parts dealing with race). Tragedy and violence destroy two lives.

One of the most controversial films of the silent film area, Broken Blossoms is a story about an unlikely friendship formed by the outcasts of London, it featured "domestic violence" which shocked many at the time. Nonetheless, it was beautifully shot with some of the most elegant set designs and editing.

Very much a product of its time, "Broken Blossoms" is my favorite Griffith film. The theme is less about interracial romance than it is selfless love. Richard Barthelmess is wholly believable as the young Buddhist priest who comes to England as a missionary intent to share his faith with the downtrodden of London. The hardships and oppression that he endures are only brightened by the lovely girl who lives and suffers nearby. Inexorably her suffering and his meet, and the transcendent love that results wins in the end, even if it isn't in the way that we moderns are used to seeing it. And I wonder--is this the baddest that we've seen Donald Crisp?--"They'll hang yer!!"

there are moments that are so melodromatic and parts where the acting is so stiff i could barely stand to watch them, but i appreciated the many novel techniques griffith used in this film that make it seem much later than even birth of a nation which he lensed only a few years earlier. this film is about five years ahead of its time technically. also, the story is of course involving on a visceral level rather than a cerebral one and seems ripe for an update. seriously, i'm thinking about doing a draft on this basic premise. with significant and key changes, of course.
