Comic perfection from the incomparable mind of Charlie Chaplin. Even after the silent film era was over, Chaplin was able to bring his "Little Tramp" character back in another silent film classic. "City Lights" rates as pssibly his best moment. Every sequence comes together beautifully, showing us why Chaplin was one and is of the top movie icons of all-time.

The first great peak in City Lights, the boxing scene, may be the most brilliant single comedy sequence of his career, not least because of the participation of Hank Mann, who plays the Tramp’s Bluto-like opponent in the ring, and Eddie Baker, who plays the referee.

My favorite Chaplin silent. He is most known for this film, even moreso than "The Gold Rush," which he wanted to be his crowning achievement. For God's sake, get the copy on DVD from Warner Bros. Although the Image Entertainment copy holds sentimental value for me (my friend produced it to video through Image), and it has a fully orchestrated, new rendition of Chaplin's score (Carl Davis), get the Warner copy, as it has the best image mastery and variety of graytones.
