It's a pity that Joaquin Phoenix has quit acting, because he is one of the finest in Hollywood. His skills are on display in his sensitive portrayal of Leonard, a character who succeeds in eliciting immense empathy from the viewer, who is as torn and tensed about his situation as he is. A great watch.

I was completely blown away by Phoenix' performance. From the directing all the way down to the set design and costuming, everything was top notch here. I can't help but compare it to the 500 DAYS OF SUMMER movie that made this whole anti-climactic narrative love story popular nowadays, but compared to that, this is CITIZEN KANE. I feel that this film has been overlooked and the "bad" reviews come from people expecting a perfect happy ending or thinking that it was supposed to be something that it happily wasn't. The 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY reference was awesome, too.
