How it is possible to communicate such great emotion through one's eyes and without using sound is beyond me. An absolutely fantastic, emotional, and captivating piece of art.

One of greatest of all silent films, "The Man Who Laughs" is a heart-wrenching tale of a man hideously deformed so that his face is always paralysed into a scarred rictus grin. This movie stands as a landmark example of the awesome power of montage and image. Conrad Veidt's legendary performance as the impossibly sweet and outcast Gwynplaine remains one of the most sympathetic portrayals of disability ever screened. Matched with Mary Philbin's Dea, this powerhouse cinematic effort has enough loaded emotion to drown Bresson.

What a disappointment. This movie was caught in between a couple different genres and got somewhat confusing. I just wish it would have been a full on Horror film; I think it would have been a much better movie that way. The costumes and sets were all lavish and nice, but it almost seemed like a costume drama to me. More style and story than substance. There were a few scenes in which I absolutely loved and the last 20 minutes was fantastic, but other than that I found it to be pretty boring.

A creeparific silent starring Conrad Veidt as a boy mutilated by gypsies and given a permanent clownish smile. Bob Kane says this is the inspiration for the Joker, and Veidt's performance is sure indelible. Tragic and exciting, romantic and insightful.

A haunting performance by Conrad Veidt as a tortured soul with an eternal grin. A fine gothic horror and tragic romance in the tradition of "Phantom" and "Hunchback". Universal knew what it was doing.
