Onibaba (1964)

While her son, Kichi, is away at war, a woman and her daughter-in-law survive by killing samurai who stray into their swamp, then selling whatever valuables they find. Both are devastated when they learn that Kichi has died, but his wife soon begins an affair with a neighbor who survived the war, Hachi. The mother disapproves and, when she can't steal Hachi for herself, tries to scare her daughter-in-law with a mysterious mask from a dead samurai.

Any fan of horror and Japanese cinema cannot miss this - thematically it's astoundingly ahead of its time and incredibly hypnotizing.

The end is the most impressive ending I have seen til now. The worse thing inside of us comes out in desperate moments, and the way this film portraits this is original and completely exquisite. Lighting is beautiful, camera movements are perfect. A mix of cruelty, horror, lust and drama. Terrible things are on screen and those moments are completely enjoyable. Delish!

A parable of purgatory. Two women, isolated, living in the tall grass of old Japan. They kill samourai and hawk their gear to a local sage who lives in a cave. There is a hole in the ground, seemingly endless, where they drop the bodies. This is where the dead go to die. And then a man comes, and with the man comes fear, jelousy, lust, greed, and then of course, the mask. This might be the most profound of any horror film I have seen.
