Onibaba (1964)

While her son, Kichi, is away at war, a woman and her daughter-in-law survive by killing samurai who stray into their swamp, then selling whatever valuables they find. Both are devastated when they learn that Kichi has died, but his wife soon begins an affair with a neighbor who survived the war, Hachi. The mother disapproves and, when she can't steal Hachi for herself, tries to scare her daughter-in-law with a mysterious mask from a dead samurai.

Well made and obviously ahead of its time, which now means a little less as its aged quite a bit. However, it's still a great, chilling story with a powerful, epic ending.

With astounding black and white photography, Onibaba explores the lives of mother and daughter-in-law through a haunting world thick with symbolism and neck-high grass. What starts as a bleak profile of two murdering profetiers takes a significant detour. It becomes a narrative essay on primitive sexuality, sexual polotics, the fear and exhileration of sexual vulnerability, and the stifling of sexuality in religion. It may be the most artistically admirable exploration of sex along with Eyes Wide Shut. The horror takes form in the barbaric actions of the characters, but is eventually magnified by a supernatural presence. The performances are strong, enjoyable, without the loud theatrics that characterize this era of Japanese cinema. The music is sort of tribal and alarming at times. It's a simplistic fable, but deeply thought-provoking.

This samurai-era classic rests its laurels on powerful imagery and a knowledge of human psychology at its worst. It bristles with desperate hunger--physical, emotional, but mostly sexual. Other reviewers claim it's a story rooted in reality, divorced from the demons of the supernatural. While true, the atmosphere closes in like the undulating reeds of the setting, weighing the closing shot of a dank, dark hole with poignancy, and leaving the viewer shuddering.
