Viridiana (1962)

Viridiana is preparing to start her life as a nun when she is sent, somewhat unwillingly, to visit her aging uncle, Don Jaime. He supports her; but the two have met only once. Jaime thinks Viridiana resembles his dead wife. Viridiana has secretly despised this man all her life and finds her worst fears proven when Jaime grows determined to seduce his pure niece. Viridiana becomes undone as her uncle upends the plans she had made to join the convent.

Devastatingly funny and highly subversive critique of religion by cinema's King Blasphemer Luis Bunuel. Amazingly, this was made in fascist Spain right under Franco's nose.

Shit. Now this is some good old fashioned classic controversial cinema. Brilliant visual metaphors, creepily performed characters (especially Rey, like always), and a perfect pace & cinematography. Absolutely everything is working for this film. The end scene, although apparently forcibly altered, seems like a perfect way to end this. I'm going to rewatch this a million times.

Como todas las películas de Buñuel, Viridiana no está exenta de polémica. A pesar de ser filmada en España y representar a este país en Cannes, Viridiana fue censurada luego por el régimen franquista.
