As an attempt at seeing the future, it's way off; as socio-political sci-fi, it's nothing "Metropolis" hadn't done ten years earlier. Nonetheless, whole stretches are fascinating. The opening scenes now look like the missing link between "Potemkin" and "Alphaville", while the closing section, set in 2036, offers a truly bizarre "Star Trek"-meets-"I, Claudius" aesthetic.

at its time of release this was probably a big screen blockbuster with all the latest effects. the book by HG wells is probably better than the movie. it was okay but there were moments where my attention was drawn away by the most random of things going on around me other than the tv screen

This film has a lot of pro's, as well as con's. In 1936, it must have been amazing, and it certainly gets a lot of points for that. It also has vivid imagination. However, it does not hold up the test of time very well. It has such vision and scope, it will always be fascinating.

Unusual adaptation of the book. The costumes and future scenery are superb, the giant machinery in the background is particularly effective. It never quite works as a story, though and suffers from some forced characterisation and poor dialogue. As an idea I think Wells got it right the first time, putting it in the form of a history book from the future. It was never really story material. Nonetheless, it's accuracy and detail in some areas is astonishing. Wells truly was a visionary.

Disappointing scifi flick based on the novel by H.G. Wells. I expected a bit more cohesion to the storyline, which just kind of wandered about aimlessly. Being made in the 30's, the special effects are...special all right. Just felt like it was lacking something.
