Is Paris Burning? (1966)

Near the end of World War II, Gen. Dietrich von Choltitz receives orders to burn down Paris if it becomes clear the Allies are going to invade, or if he cannot maintain control of the city. After much contemplation Choltitz decides to ignore his orders, enraging the Germans and giving hope to various resistance factions that the city will be liberated. Choltitz, along with Swedish diplomat Raoul Nordling, helps a resistance leader organize his forces.

A tour de force (no pun intended), with zillions of famous actors doing cameos in three languages. Excellent epic movie. Not bad history lesson, either.

A very detailed account of the Liberation Of Paris from the Nazis...General Choltitz was portrayed perfectly...someone who understood the insanity of Hitler and knew Paris lost is better than Paris destroyed... Nuances of jokes and irony amidst the war made the movie very realistic.

Snore. Like a really boring history lesson with corny theme music and the same shots over and over... the cameos are amusing but not nearly enough to hold up the movie. Also I find it unacceptable to have a WW2 film about occupation that doesn't even /allude/ to all of the Jews that were kicked out before the French decided to resist. Overall it's not a terrible film, it's just about an hour and a half too long and has no interesting characters. Wasted talent.

I actually didn't think it was "trying to be epic". It was pretty simple and realistic to me. I assume because of the book the movie is very technical, but I liked it. Another side, another cinematic history lesson. Great actors. Good movie. One thing though. If you buy the DVD, look for the original one. I got a dubbed one and it totally ruins the mood for me. There's no passion, no emotions when it's dubbed. I can read dammit. Why force the dubbed version? Hope you can find the original somewhere.
