One of Newman's best performances & one of the great sports fiilms, although like other great sports films, it is more about the characters!!! The story is very well-written & the cast is brilliant, while the direction is sharp & we are treated to some really impressive pool-playing. But Newman's 'Fast' Eddie Felson's real depth & development is the main reason to watch it.

There's a huge amount of style in this picture, but also a huge amount of substance underpinning it.

The very definition of a character study movie. Paul Newman gives one hell of a performance in his most iconic role. Great atmosphere and assured direction. All the performances from the entire cast is flawless, George C. Scott is especially astonishing as a ruthless gambler.

Can't get any better than the romanticism of black & white and one man's struggle to find who he is all while trying to make some skins
