lacks hiroyuki sanada from tasogare seibei, but i think this is the better movie for the most part. it's really pretty much the same story, but further refined. and the ending is more satisfying.

Solid genre piece, though a bit sappy. Some good (albeit superfluous) comedy scenes. Note to those expecting an action movie: The samurai went nearly 300 years without warring. If you see a samurai in a movie, don't expect him to do much fighting.

Similar to his own "Twilight Samurai", it's a Yoji Yamada movie about the last days of the samurai, in a modernizing Japan. The social clash is well shown from the point of view of a samurai that starts to defy authority. All wrapped up in a romantic story, which is a secondary part of the movie despite the trailer. Highly recommended! ;)

A tenacious survival tale in which passionate lovers are held apart by outmoded traditions. How they overcome obstacles to happiness is what makes the film so dramatically engaging.
