This film has a sense of serenity not disturbed by the turmoil brewing underneath. Right amount of subtleness, humour and intensity. Takuya Kimura at his best!

Haven't seen a Japanese "period film" for a long time and this one is a real treat!! Thought it was going to be gloomy and heavy and full of talks of sumurai spirit but was pleasantly surprised thanks to Takuya Kimura's acting and the director's attention to detail - can't wait to see his previous work.

Yoji Yamada's subtle treatment and the sensitive portrayal of a blind samurai and his struggling wife is in the same vein as Ozu's films - sombre mood prevails throughout.
