Airport 1975 (1974)

When an in-flight collision incapacitates the pilots of an airplane bound for Los Angeles, stewardess Nancy Pryor is forced to take over the controls. From the ground, her boyfriend Alan Murdock, a retired test pilot, tries to talk her through piloting and landing the 747 aircraft. Worse yet, the anxious passengers — among which are a noisy nun and a cranky man — are aggravating the already tense atmosphere.

Very campy, but its all in good fun. Basically its the story of what would happen if a small plane hit a big plane in midair. Very funny if seen today even though it was considered an action-thriller when it came out over 30 years ago.

One of my all time favorite disaster movies of the 70's (a genre I'm particularly partial to). George Kennedy is great: incidentally check out his career arc through the series: Airport-flight mechanic Airport '75-vice president of operations for Columbia Air Airport '77-businessman's assistant Airport '79: The Concorde - Concorde pilot. How I'd love to follow that career track.

Have to admit that I too found this movie quite funny, probably more so than it should have been, especially Karen Black learning that she needs to fly the plane. Also George Kennedy trying not to beat up Larry Storch. Classic! The movie turned out to be much more entertaining than I was expecting, not the classic that the first 'Airport' is, but quite watchable in its own right.

See the book 'The Stewardess is Flying the Plane' for everything you want to know about this. Priceless in its cheesyness today.

Pure cheese, but in its round-a-bout way, it holds its own.
