A prime example of why I so often don't like highly regarded oldies. Setting aside the goofiness of the Americans playing Chinese characters, it's just a dog's breakfast of a movie. The acting is really bad. Luise Rainer is particularly unbearable - and she actually won an Oscar. There are ludicrous plot turns, awful characters and characterizations. There are some redeeming points but all I can say is, man, I hope the book is much better. 3.9 out of 10

Epic agrarian saga set againstteh backdrop of famine and revolution in turn of the century China. Considering the time it was made, both technically and politically this film is some achievement. Themes like land ownership and use, community versus family and man versus nature all crop up. Less interesting when the two stars entre the Great House and move away from nature where things meandre somewhat

Woohoo!!! I'm the first to review this movie! This was actually suggested to me by a friend. At first I was skeptical. It's 70 years old, and stars American actors trying to play Asians. Although it shows its age in parts, and the cultural aspects aren't exactly insightful, the story is timeless. There wasn't a single moment that I wasn't entertained with. For its time it was also quite a technical achievment. In fact, I would say this is still one of the best love stories ever put to film. Highly recommend it.

I loved The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck, and was surprised by how faithful the movie was to the novel. However, it's more of a story that should stay in novel form, than movie form, for it's plodding pace might turn off people who haven't read the novel. I felt it was a solid movie, and then "fall" of Wang Lung going from a simple farmer to someone losing touch with the land and O-Lan as truly heartbreaking, but more heartbreaking in the novel than shown here. Perhaps the film suffered from cramming too much in just two hours, I'm not sure. The locust part at the end felt very dragged out and boring, and the ending differed a bit - the novel ending was much more powerful. However, overall, I enjoyed it, and thought it was a solid film.
