Once the picture gets past a lumbering opening, it succeeds in involving us in the plight of its struggling protagonists.

One of my favorite books made into film. Loved it! Definitely time for an updated version with an all Chinese cast, especially in the main roles and not just in minor roles or as extras. I think I'll go read the book again now.
