Ms. Inoh gives an inspiring performance that evokes a genuine sympathy for both of her characters.

along with "city of sadness" are two best works of hou. as most of his film, this one is also complex and challenging, but never inaccessible. annie(yi neng jing)'s profromence in the film just as good as faye wang in chungking express, but more diffcult by acts two different roles. just be patient, u will soon find out it is a masterpeice.

Hou mixes up the chronology big time here consisting of two contemporary narratives are awesome and serves as a precursor to Millennium Mambo which I now want to rewatch, and a B/W historical enactment narrative which was like City of Sadness except it was snoozers but I guess it was important to the contemporary parts. The dvd is horrendous.

Pretty unforgivably dull and pretentious. Well shot, but such a chore. I'm sorry, but really. Mostly just boring, although the scenes that were intended to be harrowing came across as just plain irritating. I found this flat and emotionless.
