A film that basically tells us that the men who control and start the wars are evil human beings without conscience or a moral barometer. Probably my favorite Stanley Kubrick film. The image of Kirk Douglas as Col.Dax readying his men as we get a front shot of him walking through the trenches with bombs going off over head makes the film even better. Great camera work and truly a depressing story of the reality of war. Soldiers, not only are you fighting for your lives against the enemy, youre fighting against your generals as well. Maybe thats the main point here: in war, were only fighting ourselves.

Probably the greatest "war" movie ever made. I don't agree it is anti-war, although the book was. The character of Col. Dax really captures the sense of duty and also sense of justice, but never questions the war and war itself.

Visually masterful and brutal in its assault on military logic and hierarchy.

Intense, heartbreaking, infuriating, touching, and sublime.

Not a conventional war movie, nor a conventional trial movie, Paths of Glory feels amazingly fresh even now in 2010, despite the fact that it takes place in 1914 and was made in 1957. And aside from being original genre-wise, the movie is very well made in virtually every way: the writing and directing in particular are great, and most of the actors do a fabulous job. I have not seen Killer's Kiss, and am not sure if it makes much sense to compare this to The Killing, but if you compare it to Fear and Desire, I think it is clear in Paths of Glory that Kubrick had grown into a vastly superior director since Fear and Desire. He also has demonstrated skill once again in screenwriting (I don't know about Killer's Kiss, but The Killing was certainly well written).
