The Butler (2013)

Cecil Gaines was a sharecropper's son who grew up in the 1920s as a domestic servant for the white family who casually destroyed his. Eventually striking out on his own, Cecil becomes a hotel valet of such efficiency and discreteness in the 1950s that he becomes a butler in the White House itself. There, Cecil would serve numerous US Presidents over the decades as a passive witness of history with the American Civil Rights Movement gaining momentum even as his family has troubles of its own. As his wife, Gloria, struggles with alcoholism and his defiant eldest son, Louis, strives for a just world, Cecil must decide whether he should take action in his own way.

Fantastically moving!! Within five minutes , I was glued... And most importantly, it's been a LONG time since a movie has moved me!! One of the best I have seen in a long time!!!

In my humble opinion The Butler deserved Best Picture. It isn't that 12 Years a Slave wasn't worthy of that honor, because it was. It is that this movie was one step above the greatness that 12 Years brought us. Forest Whitaker is a master in the role he portrays and Oprah Winfrey reminds us that she is a stellar actress. I'm not a fan of Oprah at all, but she complemented Whitaker so well that one forgets that she reigned as a talk show host for years. This movie demonstrates the best in film making where history is told and we are exposed to it. I highly recommend everyone see this really great film.

A story that has desperate pleas that many are unwilling to hear even today. Great peoples make up the civil rights movement and black power is like any other when humanity faces inequity. More balancing needs to take place in the horrid past america has unfortunately suffered onto minorities and indeed women. Until people truly see the golden rule as significant in their own lives we will fail the humanity test. I was part of the civil rights movement, am proud of it and await further honesty as depicted in the butler. Our new nation is leading the world in that quest. This story shows part of the ugly truth. Indigenous peoples enslaved and repressed ultimately bring us that opportunity I just pray we can grow strong enough to face and humbly own it.
