For being the first Talkie.. it was good. I still find myself singing song from it. I'm sure in the day it was incredible though.

Now more fascinating as a historical object than it is as an entertainment, the film is one of the important milestones in filmmaking but comes loaded with the baggage of the era. Placing that baggage in the context of its era is sometimes difficult, but if one manages to do it they allow themselves the chance to see a charming bit of entertainment that changed the way films were made.

Dopey and sentimental, mostly silent, but still pretty good.

The first motion picture to have synchronised singing and dialogue has not aged very well, but it's still a joy to watch. I had not seen this in almost 10 years, and I still enjoyed it. Being an Al Jolson fan, it a treat to watch him do his thing. The future of film was forever changed when Jolson spoke those immortal words "You ain't heard nothing yet!"

Not only is it an important landmark in movie history, it also happens to be an engrossing, if somewhat dated (polite euphemism), story.
