This is a wonderful movie, an amalgamation of silent and talking modes into one picture (remember, this was a huge milestone for Warner Brothers!). The scene that really tugged on my emotions was when Al Jolson's character sang a beautiful rendition of "Kol Nidre." It was amazing to see that especially since Jolson was Jewish in real life. If there's anyone who wants to see what a movie was like over 80 years ago, watch this!

The first talkie was surprisingly well-made for 1927. Interesting picture that was part-talkie, part-silent. Judaism is a prominent feature in this groundbreaker.

This movie has a totally deep storyline with a lot of meaning as Neil Diamond searches to find himself as a musician/singer/songwriter, he fights through many obstacles being in a jewish family & with a wife that is obsessed with hanging onto him instead of letting him find his dream...later he does find that soul mate...you must see in order to understand...

Although many have seen clips from this film, I suspect that a significant number have never watched the whole thing... and if you're in that group, you've missed a lot. Although most often remembered as being the "first" talkie -- the film is rich in themes and sub-themes and holds up astonishingly well for an 80+ year old movie. From the internal battle between family desires and personal dreams to the tug of tradition versus career, many of the topics dealt with will resonate with all viewers. Highly recommended for the whole family.

I know, it's racist in some ways. And the sound is only really there for the singing. But the blackface minstral stuff, as distasteful as it is, was the way it was back then. Everything, including music and show-business, was segregated. It's important to see that and realize how much progress we have made in 80 years. The whole technology aspect of adding sound to movies is facinating also.
