John Boorman's long-gestating sequel to Hope and Glory is a very personal and reflective film from the honored director, that may very well prove to be his swan song. It's a film about post-war England that avoids being depressing, and instead it's a bittersweet film about romance, and false honor. Humorous, histrionic, and modest in terms of cinematic techniques, Queen and Country isn't one of Boorman's best films, but it doesn't need to be.

Having loved Hope and Glory I was a bit hesitant going into this film. Much to my surprise it was an interesting story with the same mix of laughs and charm balanced with some gut punching all too familiar moments.

A welcome, thoroughly enjoyable follow up (to "Hope & Glory'). John Boorman hasn't lost his touch for finding humor and even wonder in the seemingly mundane experiences of life.

Mostly, the gorgeously shot Queen and Country depicts Bill and his more rebellious mate Percy pursuing beautiful women with varying degrees of success — and pulling pranks on their exasperated superiors, hilariously portrayed by David Thewlis and Richard E. Grant.
