Mephisto (1981)

A German stage actor finds unexpected success and mixed blessings in the popularity of his performance in a Faustian play as the Nazis take power in pre-WWII Germany. A strong film about the mechanisms of power and dependancy, never outdated.

Istvan Szabo's Mephisto is brilliant metaphorical filmmaking containing one of the more memorable film-acting performances in recent years.

Although overlong and at times slow, Mephisto is one very powerful drama with particularly strong direction from Istvan Szabo and such a phenomenal performance from Klaus Maria Brandauer who beautifully brought his complex character to life. It deals with a familiar subject matter in a new and authentic manner with interesting dialogue and themes well explored and the blend of a famous older tale and more recent time period worked almost flawlessly.

The first time I saw this film in my twenties, I found it repulsive. Now that I saw it again, I found the main character understandable and even sympathetic. The film shows well how one can't collaborate with a totalitarian system and remain apolitical at the same time. I don't give more than four stars because the film was too long.

An interesting exploration of how an actor can change his mind about political interests based upon the pursuit of fame, national identity and success. Not sure if the ending was an ending but I can see what they hoped to achieve. Not sure if the film is against or for National Socialism but they do show the movement as prominently confident and strong yet suppressive regarding anything outside their ideology/politics. The film is less stage and more his personal life and standing.
