The Mephisto Waltz (1971)

A frustrated pianist himself, music journalist Myles Clarkson is thrilled to interview virtuoso Duncan Ely. Duncan, however, is terminally ill and not much interested in Myles until noticing that Myles' hands are ideally suited for piano. Suddenly, he can't get enough of his new friend, and Myles' wife, Paula, becomes suspicious of Duncan's intentions. Her suspicions grow when Duncan dies and Myles mysteriously becomes a virtuoso overnight.

In this Rosemary's Baby knock off, Alan Alda plays a pianist who dances with the devil, while Jacqueline Bisset smolders up the screen as his terrified wife. Satanist movies were a dime a dozen in the seventies, but this one's a notch or two above average, elevated by a good cast, imaginative cinematography, a creepy score by Jerry Goldsmith (and, of course, Franz Liszt), and a memorably twisted ending. It was the only film that 20th Century-Fox produced during the entire calendar year of 1970!

it was a gd horror movie i guess i saw this movie last night and there were some parts i did not like but still a gd horor movie if u like old horror movie then u have to see it and its about A music journalist (Alan Alda) scores the interview of a lifetime when a terminally ill piano virtuoso (Curd Jürgens) agrees to talk to him. But the opportunity doesn't come cheap -- the price is giving up his soul. Although the writer's wife (Jacqueline Bisset) suspects something's wrong, she has no idea her husband's been possessed. Barbara Parkins also stars in this classic 1970s thriller.

Occasionally stellar (especially as far as atmosphere goes, though 70's horror just about got it down to an art form). It's too heavy-handed, however, to be an enjoyable derivative. Awesome if it's only playing in the background, though.
