Méphisto (1931)

On his wedding night with Hilda Bergmann, the daughter of a swedish chemist, the young and rich american Willy Keanton is stabbed by an unidentified masked man. He kidnaps the young woman, who is found later on by the count Robert d'Arbel. The detective Jacques Miral, nicknamed « the pointed tower's ferret » is put in charge of the case. Soon, he discovers that an international bandit, Méphisto, seeks to seize the formula of a process against asphyxiating gas, invented by professor Bergmann. The struggle is tough between Miral and the uncatchable Méphisto. Monique Aubray, Keanton's secretary and engaged to the detective, the Nostradamus stallholders and the « mastiff of Bordeaux », and the famous novelist Fortuné Bidon are also involved in the case...

the best part of szabo's trilogy. fine interpetation to the well known story.

A talented stage actor gradually trades his ideals for success under the Third Reich. It's certainly no coincidence that his signature role is Mephistopholes in "Faust". This movie reminded a lot of Fassbinder: the vivid colors, the period, the particular style of political allegory. Something like a Fassbinder version of The Conformist, perhaps. Klaus Maria Brandauer is superb in the lead, a very complicated role. As an actor, Hendrik is a natural at putting on a facade, and the audience is often unsure of exactly where he stands. I would say the film is a little blunt at times, but I still very much enjoyed it.

Fantastic. You can't take your eyes of Brandauer. Ethics, integrity and desire. The personal is political. I love this movie.

Deep, dark, and inspiring. Provided by Sky Arts on the Sky Anytime service. Film is superb. So is Sky! Brandauer is sinisterly brilliant as an actor acting real life as a role - with the Faustian outcome reversed.....

An interesting exploration of how an actor can change his mind about political interests based upon the pursuit of fame, national identity and success. Not sure if the ending was an ending but I can see what they hoped to achieve. Not sure if the film is against or for National Socialism but they do show the movement as prominently confident and strong yet suppressive regarding anything outside their ideology/politics. The film is less stage and more his personal life and standing.
