Plucky Englishwoman Joan Webster travels to the remote islands of the Scottish Hebrides in order to marry a wealthy industrialist. Trapped by inclement weather on the Isle of Mull and unable to continue to her destination, Joan finds herself charmed by the straightforward, no-nonsense islanders around her, and becomes increasingly attracted to naval officer Torquil MacNeil, who holds a secret that may change her life forever.

Excellent little film--a romance filled with mystery, tradition, and a fair bit of comedy. The directors' light touch with this material brings a winning charm to the proceedings, while the remote Scottish locale never fails to invite interest. Their use of the landscapes, the weather, and the cramped interiors all combine to press in around Joan as she desperately tries to reach her destination, never once paying attention to the wider world--or the wonderful people--around her.

Quite different from other 1940's films that I've seen. It's much more realistic. It's fascinating because you feel like you're watching real people from that period rather than an idealized view.

After wowing me with The Black Narcissus, The Red Shoes and The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, I can't believe this duo wowed me again with this. Truly, one of the greats.

I urge the entire world to find and watch this movie. So many nuggets of Scottish wisdom. "The people here are very poor"...."No. They just don't have much money". "He has the finest rods and creel but ach, the fish don't know it". All combined with the beauty of Mull and the glory of a Powell/Pressburger production. All time favourite.

Powell and Pressburger whipped this one together while waiting for the technicolour equipment to become available for AMOLAD - but it doesn't look like an afterthought - it's fantastic. I've even named my son after the Roger Livesay character!
