Plucky Englishwoman Joan Webster travels to the remote islands of the Scottish Hebrides in order to marry a wealthy industrialist. Trapped by inclement weather on the Isle of Mull and unable to continue to her destination, Joan finds herself charmed by the straightforward, no-nonsense islanders around her, and becomes increasingly attracted to naval officer Torquil MacNeil, who holds a secret that may change her life forever.

I Know Where I'm Going is one of the finest romances to ever grace the silver screen. Powell & Pressburger use the glorious Scottish Isles as their backdrop for this classic tale of a determined woman who falls for a different man. One of the most amazing aspects of the film is that it's cinematographer never used a light meter for the outdoor scenes. The end result is unusual, unexpected, and fascinating to watch. I Know Where I'm Going is a classic that deserves to be mentioned alongside other essential romantic films such as Casablanca and Brief Encounter.

Outlandishly beautiful (one of the most atmospheric films--in good part to the amazing Erwin Hillier who brought his experience with Fritz Lang to fruition here) with a wonderful story to boot. I really loved everything about this one. And, with any Criterion production, the extras are amazing and revealing.

Ah, the Scottish highlands. So rugged in their beauty (even in black and white) as to cause headstrong lasses to lose their marbles and fall in love with the wrong/right laddies. A dear of a film.

This is my favorite movie. I love everything about it- writing, acting, directing... and it's set in Scotland. A must see for anyone who likes romantic movies.
