Sweet Smell of Success (1957)

New York City newspaper writer J.J. Hunsecker holds considerable sway over public opinion with his Broadway column, but one thing that he can't control is his younger sister, Susan, who is in a relationship with aspiring jazz guitarist Steve Dallas. Hunsecker strongly disapproves of the romance and recruits publicist Sidney Falco to find a way to split the couple, no matter how ruthless the method.

A black and white orgasm on film. And by that I mean the exquisite cinematography! Seeing a new print at Cinemateque at the AGO was a religious experience for me. New York in the 50s, cracking dialogue, jazz and cigarette smoke. "I love this damn dirty town!" Just watch it, you won't be disappointed. Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis's absolute best performances, as a twisted parasitic duo. Come here you uninterested 82%, I want to chastise you!

A cut-throat game of revenge and ambition! Set in the back-stabbing world of print tabloid journalism in NYC! And with amazing, probably career-best performances by Burt Lancaster, Tony Curtis, and the almost movie-stealing Barbara Nichols. I loved it! I would put t up there in my favorites!

Sharp dialogue, flawless direction, and outstanding performances from deliciously villainous Burt Lancaster (one of my favourite actors) and his "sidekick" played by hugely underrated Tony Curtis make this film noir about power and corruption one of the essential films to see. I can't get enough of this film.
