The director, Bill Duke ("A Rage in Harlem"), stages all of this with proficient confidence, yet he never truly summons the operatic power of the genre -- the pulp tragedy of ambition built on (and drowned in) blood.

I always wanted to see this movie and for some reason never picked it up. I thought it was cool gangster film with some good shoot out scenes. Although I felt the film was not as dark as it could be and suffered for it. There were too many scenes that did not connect and it felt like it did not flow as well as it good. Laurence Fishburne is great. Overall though it was entertaining but the ending was not as climatic as I was hoping for.

I really love this movie. It's a great epic gangster film with some really first rate performances especially from Tim Roth and Cicely Tyson.
