Gardens of Stone (1987)

At Arlington National Cemetery during the Vietnam era, veteran sergeant Clell Hazard trains young soldiers while mourning those lost in combat. Unable to return to war himself, he mentors Jackie Willow—the idealistic son of a fallen comrade—hoping to prepare him for the realities of Vietnam and the cost of duty.

Amazing character piece, but turns on the melodrama knob up to 200 pretty much every time a woman enters the frame, which makes it less of a classic and more of a REALLY good episode of MASH.

There is NOT ONE THING WRONG,and EVERYTHING RIGH with this movie. I've spent 35 years TIS so far, and I think this should be mandatory watching for everyone...

A little dry in spots where more authentic emotions would have made a big difference, minus the impressive performance by James Earl Jones. This movie tryed to hype up emotion, but the whole time it came off so slow and gloomy. I wanted a story to develop where the beginning was different than the end or maybe I'd learn something new or devastating. Predictable and blah.

Depicts the Story of Delta Co., 3rd US Infantry Regiment (THE OLD GUARD) my brother was in that unit. great movie. a classic. by far my favorite.

For want of a timeless message on the horrors of war, Coppola does indeed tell a compelling story of one man's battle on the homefront. Caan gives a stunning performance after a five-year absence from the movie screen.
