The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943)

General Candy, who's overseeing an English squad in 1943, is a veteran leader who doesn't have the respect of the men he's training and is considered out-of-touch with what's needed to win the war. But it wasn't always this way. Flashing back to his early career in the Boer War and World War I, we see a dashing young officer whose life has been shaped by three different women, and by a lasting friendship with a German soldier.

Curious as to how modern day filmmakers can make a looooonnnnnnggggggg film without our interest waning? This (along with a few other choice titles) will explain it.

My favourite powell/pressburger. Just a delight to watch.

This film is perfect, it shows a tenderness to the old world but insists it must be jettisoned, presents the Germans as human but accepts the rationale that the Nazis must be mercilessly crushed. It has a great love story (stories), a great friendship and two scenes featuring Anton Walbrook as the older Theo which are quiet and reserved but amoungst the most breathtaking I've ever seen in a film. And Roger Livesey is great.

Not only is The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp one of the most complex, nuanced, and best Powell/Pressburger films that they made, but it is also one of the finest films ever made period.

I almost never find myself immediately attached to romantic comedies and war films, yet this combination of the two has to be among my new favorites. While I find myself once again not exactly doubling over for the dated humor, the warm-hearted feel of the film makes the characters incredibly sympathetic without ever clearly aiming for it. Powell and Pressburger were simply ahead of their time, as filmmakers.
