General Candy, who's overseeing an English squad in 1943, is a veteran leader who doesn't have the respect of the men he's training and is considered out-of-touch with what's needed to win the war. But it wasn't always this way. Flashing back to his early career in the Boer War and World War I, we see a dashing young officer whose life has been shaped by three different women, and by a lasting friendship with a German soldier.

A true British classic, would easily be in my top 5 British films of all time. And the restoration is fantastic. Best Powell & Pressburger film I've seen so far and that's an extremely high watermark

The acting was superb, the direction was amazing, the story is solidly written and must be paid attention to. The ending actually brought a tear to my eye. I highly recommend it.

A critic (I forget who) once summed it up perfectly - "Is this the greatest British movie ever, or merely the best film ever about being British?". For me its only narrowly not the former but is definitely the latter.
