Punishment Park (1971)

In this fictional documentary, U.S. prisons are at capacity, and President Nixon declares a state of emergency. All new prisoners, most of whom are connected to the antiwar movement, are now given the choice of jail time or spending three days in Punishment Park, where they will be hunted for sport by federal authorities. The prisoners invariably choose the latter option, but learn that, between the desert heat and the brutal police officers, their chances of survival are slim.

An interesting but empty film. Battle Royale, though more bloody and violent, had a stronger thematic approach and a more lasting impact than this film, which was mostly filmed with painful political rants and a pretty ugly view towards police officers and the national guard without a healthy bias. The idealism presented in the story from the viewpoints of the prisoners is just as empty as the idealism for a "better world" that is expressed today, and although our arguments against those haven't grown much, the alternatives still are sparse. A brave and interesting film, though a tad insipid. My favorite character was the prisoner who quoted Aquinas and Augustine: he definitely had his head on the straightest.

Is "Punishment Park" impossible? Is pseudo-documentary type of movie so advanced for the time when it was released, of its so scary to believe that many of the scenes witnessed in this movie are actually happening. In USA and elsewhere. We saw Patriot Act, we saw terorism war, and we're still seeing a lot of excuses for "Punishment Park" It's so incredible to me that "Punishment Park" was filmed the same year that "Stamford prison experiment" was held ("Das Experiment" is another great film on that subject). Dr. Zimbardo would probably see the "Punishment Park" as the possible conclusion of his experiment that he was forced to end (regarding the behaviour of the people included). I would adapt the "Punishment Park" for todays audience but somehow I think that we're much more used to it then the audiences in 70s, and with that thought in my head (after this movie) I can just ask - is this evolution?

The documentary style cinematography is a little overdone and annoying, but this is otherwise a haunting and memorable movie. While it could be argued that it's dated, the movie's opening lines almost exactly describes the thinking that led to the Guantanamo prison camp...

This one is a must see!!!! Some of you will say it's old (70's) but the political situation asn't changed much since Vietnam so it is still very relevant to today's events. It is NOT a feel good movie, more of an eye opener.... see what kind of shitty world we all live in!

By no means an easy viewing experience, Watkins' horrifying film about 70s youth rebelling against the government who has stripped them of their constitutional rights and forced into a sadistic game digs under your skin. What's even more horrific is just how relevant is today some 36 years later.
