Punishment Park (1971)

In this fictional documentary, U.S. prisons are at capacity, and President Nixon declares a state of emergency. All new prisoners, most of whom are connected to the antiwar movement, are now given the choice of jail time or spending three days in Punishment Park, where they will be hunted for sport by federal authorities. The prisoners invariably choose the latter option, but learn that, between the desert heat and the brutal police officers, their chances of survival are slim.

Before the Patriot Act and department for Homeland Security legitimized north American fascism Peter Watkins (also responsible for the BBC film The War Game) explored the very same ideas and their consequences almost forty years ago. It's a narrative film shot to look and feel like a documentary as it alternates between the military tribunal of a group 1960's radicals (tried for crimes they have not actually committed- merely their political creed) and their sentence in the eponymous title for their perceived transgressions against US hegemony. A film of rare formal and thematic maturity and complexity. Watkins deserves to be uttered in the same breath as Godard and Rocha.

Wow. This film had a powerful emotional impact on me. If you get sucked into it you'll most likely forget that you're watching a psuedo-documentary. Goes well with "Winter Soldier".

An interesting, incendiary exercise in pseudo-documentary which possibly pushes the boundaries of what could and should be acheived with the medium. Watkins places individuals on both sides of the fence in a potentially dangerous situation and seems to lose control of the project towards the end. An indispensable document of it's time.

A strange pseudo documentary about a prison system that forces hippies to run across the desert while being pursed by the national guard (as part of their trainning). This Film has an amazing premise and a political ideology that is in ways relevant to our own time, but one can help but feel that the director is beating the audience over the head with it.
