Toyland (2007)

On a winter morning, a mother goes to waken her son Heinrich; his bed is empty. She leaves her flat to find him. The neighbors' door, with a Star of David painted on it, is ajar, the furnishings in disarray, the family gone. She asks passersby, runs to the police then on to the rail yard. Flashbacks show that Heinrich and the neighbors' son Paul are six years old and best friends. Paul's family's deportation is expected soon; Heinrich's mother tells her son that they're going to Toyland. Heinrich wants to go with them, has a bag packed, and listens for their departure. His mother realizes he's joined them, and her resolve becomes more urgent. Will she arrive in time to save Heinrich?

A perfect use of the short subject medium. A simple tale with an affecting twist.

One would expect this movie to have a sad, depressing ending, but it doesn't. This short movie ends on a happier note.

It's not surprising to me that this one won the Oscar for best short (foreign and short categories tend to lean toward Holocaust stories) but I don't think it deserved it. It's well-done from a cinematic and acting standpoint, but the plotline was predictable, the dialogue was a bit cliched, and the ending was just sappy. Things like this happened during the Holocaust undoubtedly, but the film, while good, is nothing extraordinary.

Amazing and powerful for a short movie. It is all about the last scenes, but given the fact that there was almost no money for this production the director did a great job!
