Jason Staebler lives on the Boardwalk and fronts for the local mob in Atlantic City. He is a dreamer who asks his brother David, a radio personality from Philadelphia, to help him build a paradise on a Pacific Island, which might be just another of his pie-in-the-sky schemes. La secuencia inicial promete algo bueno, pero no es mas que una casualidad. Una interesante premisa, rodada muy bien y con interpretes de primer nivel, pero no alcanza. El guion es inconexo y lleno de agujeros, ademas de que contiene un tufillo pseudo-intelectual que no viene al caso. Una mezcolanza entre drama y policial que jamas llega a cuajar, terriblemente confuso y denso. Menospreciado en su momento, ahora es considerado un filme de culto. Para mi no es mas que otra de la lista de las pretenciosas. Olvidable.

the movie is worth watching because of the photography, brilliantly handled by laszlo kovacs, and the setting of atlantic city small time double-crosser, his brother, his wacked girlfriend and her daughter, together with a badass oldschool crime boss. character studies are well done (one of the brothers is too daring to be a businesman, or a cheater, and the other one is too calculated to be an artist), and follows the line of five easy pieces. but, the film is so chamber, talky, and eventually could be boring. thank god that jack saves the day.

Shares a similar mood and unfulfilled potential as Rafelson's previous Five Easy Pieces, but as opposed to that film this all feels somewhat familiar and if it hadn't been for Nicholson and Dern's performances or Nicholson's opening and closing monologues the film would have been entirely forgettabe.
