Green Zone (2010)

During the U.S.-led occupation of Baghdad in 2003, Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller and his team of Army inspectors are dispatched to find weapons of mass destruction believed to be stockpiled in the Iraqi desert. Rocketing from one booby-trapped and treacherous site to the next, the men search for deadly chemical agents but stumble instead upon an elaborate cover-up that threatens to invert the purpose of their mission.

If you disagree with the politics presented, then you'll probably be a little annoyed with it, I'll admit that. But it never came off as preachy to me, and it weaves together fact and fiction with surprising grace. Greengrass's direction is much better here than it was in the Bourne sequels, and I found it genuinely thrilling and enjoyable.

Anyone giving this a low score because they try to throw political bs in the mix should be reminded that they went to go see an action movie, not a bias documentary. Entertainment is much differentthnqn politics, and this movie is clearly (and very effectively, might I add) entertaining. Great acting, a suspenseful story, and chaotic action sequences all pull together to make a hell of an action-drama. Please do not compare to The Hurt Locker, because it is NOT the same topics and clearly not the same type of cinematography.

What really disappoints me about the critical consensus of this movie is that I spent 15 months in Iraq as Infantryman/Interpreter assigned to an EOD unit, and out of all the movies about Iraq that have come out during the last decade, this is the only one which truly captures my experience. Watching this film was like genuinely being back in Iraq. I strongly suspect that the reviewers who gave this film a negative review missed the point. This movie is not implicitly meant to tell a story. It's not meant to have a resolution. It's meant to relay the chaos soldiers experience when they obey the mandate of "don't ask questions, just complete the mission". I spent 15 months not asking questions, just completing the missions assigned. This movie captures that feeling more accurately than other Iraq movie I've seen. The critical consensus is extremely disappointing. But cudos to Paul Greengrass for staying true to the material in a way no other director has done.

Great film, action-packed to the end. Realistic and an awesome plot to get stuck in with.
