Damned If You Don't (1987)

It begins with footage from a stylish old potboiler about an isolated convent, whose tale of passions leashed and unleashed provides the leitmotif for a young lesbian who watches it and the lonely nun she pursues and seduces. As the two women's lives come closer to joining, voiceovers from the biography of a 16th century lesbian nun and the reminiscences of a woman's closeted romances at a Catholic school flesh out the theme.

The inclusion of sequences from Black Narcissus alone is worth seeing this for. The rest of the film was hit or miss for me but it was never un-interesting.

Director Su Friedrich turns Catholicism on it's ear in this telling of a nun coming to terms with her repressed sexuality. Avant-garde films often have very limited appeal and this one is certainly no exception. Friedrich's use of religious iconography and frank lesbian overtones will no doubt be offensive to some, but her honest and unpretentious approach shows a complete lack of malicious intent. I found the whole thing provocative, sensual and courageous.

A deep reflection on urges and conventional systems and how they clash...if you can follow it. Definitely a challenge to follow.
