Douglas Sirk es un director que abandonó el cine en 1959, pero que no ha sido olvidado por directores como Quentin Tarantino o Pedro Almodóvar. "All That Heaven Allows", un relato romántico sobre una viuda reprimida que se enamora de su joven jardinero, puede parecer lo más "kitsch" del mundo, pero gracias al elegante manejo de la fotografía, los diálogos, el ritmo y la denuncia social de Sirk, es en realidad una bellísima obra de arte. El director Rainer Werner Fassbinder realizó un grandioso homenaje a esta película llamado "Ali - Fear Eats The Soul" y Todd Haynes por su parte, hizo la magnífica "Far From Heaven" inspirado también en "All That Heaven Allows". Tantos autores de calidad no pueden equivocarse y usted como espectador tampoco. Este es un clásico.

Watch the Criterion blu-ray of this and just try not to think that this is one of the most beautifully shot films of all time. Great commentary on the shallow bourgeoisie existence versus the search for meaning as well!

I love this movie as well. Douglas Sirk makes the most of the camea angles to add to the mood of the movie. It is charming to see Wyman in something besides Falcon Crest and it has a good plot too. :)

Another masterpiece by melodrama's auteur Douglas Sirk, All That Heaven Allows is a beautiful and sensitive film, "quieter" than Sirk's other films, but more heart-wrenching. The social prejudices depicted in the film - all of Sirk's melodramas have a subtle but piercing irony by deconstructing the American society\family - are the major obstacle for Ron and Cary's love. Those irrational preconceptions are the things that keep us from "living" completely, as the director wisely points out. Typically a Sirk's film - lush colors, gorgeous costumes, and an excellent direction - but much more intimate and understanding than other melodramas. Truly, a masterpiece.
