Short Cuts (1993)

Many loosely connected characters cross paths in this film, based on the stories of Raymond Carver. Waitress Doreen Piggot accidentally runs into a boy with her car. Soon after walking away, the child lapses into a coma. While at the hospital, the boy's grandfather tells his son, Howard, about his past affairs. Meanwhile, a baker starts harassing the family when they fail to pick up the boy's birthday cake.

Seriously underrated film, this one, and a huge influence on Paul Thomas Anderson. Presents a series of events in California linked by several individuals with 'seven degrees of separation'. One of the best ensemble casts of modern cinema, Short Cuts is a film about detachment from modern society and the hazy longing for something better. Essential 4am viewing and a great part for Tom Waits too.

I've loved this movie since seeing it in the theater back in 1993. Over the years I've been surprised that not many know of this awesome movie. My favorite character was the cop played by Tim Robbins. He's really good at playing an a$$hole.

Episodic Narrative is correct. Wonderful observational movie about the things that creep in between men and women, between people in general. There are a lot of arguments in the film, a lot of unhappy people. But the film is, in many ways, warning us about these sorts of things, even though it knows we may not be able to fully avoid them.
