When lovely and virtuous governess Henriette Deluzy comes to educate the children of the debonair Duc de Praslin, a royal subject to King Louis-Philippe and the husband of the volatile and obsessive Duchesse de Praslin, she instantly incurs the wrath of her mistress, who is insanely jealous of anyone who comes near her estranged husband. Though she saves the duchess's little son from a near-death illness and warms herself to all the children, she is nevertheless dismissed by the vengeful duchess as the attraction between the duke and Henriette continues to grow.

Davis and Boyer are the penultimate star crossed lovers of a very conservative society. The intensity of the suffering of both, especially of Theo at his deathbed is the most memorable scene in the film...

This movie is extremely well acted. I dont remember ever seeing Bette Davis in this type of role. This is one of the movies that sticks with you awhile after youve seen it. How do they contain all of that passion for oe another...it really speaks to the times....

Anatole Litvak directs with tact and restraint this period melodrama (a woman's picture) about a governess who falls for her employer-nobleman. Davis and Boyer are good, but it's Barbara O'Neil who stands out as Boyer's neurotic and obsessive wife.

Bette Davis is perfection in everything she does, but the movie in itself is great too, which was a nice surprise for me - I'd only watched it because she was in it!

This is very sad movie so if you don't like sad movies don't see this one. However you would be missing out on a great film: Bette Davis is perfect in the role and Charles Boyer is suitably debonair in his role as the father of the children Henriette cares for. I really recommend this.
