Bette Davis plays her part as imagined, completely winning us over that pathetic Eve.

Bette Davis is maybe the best reason for anyone to watch it, as well as the the excellent work by Manciewicz (co-writter of the script for Welles's "Citizen Kane").

A backstage triumph for Hollywood, with one of the most quotable scripts in all film. In the age of Disney-manufactured stars, even today's Britney wanna-bes will treasure this film. Bette Davis basically plays herself, while the sociopathic duo of Anne Baxter and George Sanders are in career-defining roles. Kids will thrill to see a youthful Celeste Holm decades before her turn in the Harry Potter films. And Marilyn Monroe's small role is a harbinger for her iconic status. One of the greatest films of the Golden Age, or any age. Beyond essential.

Bitingly sharp showbiz satire starring Bette Davis as a fading theatre star who takes in a destitute fan, only to realise she is being usurped from her throne. Davis delivers a definitive performance, full of malice and humour, while George Sanders is wonderfully droll as a critic who pulls some strings of his own, but the real star is the script. Dry, acerbic and hilarious, it's certainly a classic from Hollywood's Golden Age. Watch and savour.
