Thief Gaston Monescu and pickpocket Lily are partners in crime and love. Working for perfume company executive Mariette Colet, the two crooks decide to combine their criminal talents to rob their employer. Under the alias of Monsieur Laval, Gaston uses his position as Mariette's personal secretary to become closer to her. However, he takes things too far when he actually falls in love with Mariette, and has to choose between her and Lily.

The Lubitsch touch really has just been something I have discovered. Really fascinating to see cinema of this era being much more open about sexuality and story telling that bucks the puritanical nature of many other U.S. produced films. The cast only brings further magic to Lubitsch's vision. Now I think I need to seek out more of this director's titles.

A brilliant romantic dramedy about a con-artist couple who delve into the financial (and for the man, romantic) life of a rich widow. Wonderful performances all around, with the romance between Colet and Monescu perfectly done. I found myself caught up in the ridiculous affair, where the cheater got cheated on by the one who was suppose to be cheated! A real gem of early, pre-code Hollywood cinema. Sidenote: Films before the production code, like this one, make me realize how many good films (or at least scenes) we must have lost until the 60s because of Hollywood's fear of sexuality. Meanwhile, violence continued to be just fine...I never understand it.
