Thief Gaston Monescu and pickpocket Lily are partners in crime and love. Working for perfume company executive Mariette Colet, the two crooks decide to combine their criminal talents to rob their employer. Under the alias of Monsieur Laval, Gaston uses his position as Mariette's personal secretary to become closer to her. However, he takes things too far when he actually falls in love with Mariette, and has to choose between her and Lily.

Why is Lubitsch so perfect? His films are some of the most lovable that I've ever watched. I immediately want to watch them again and again! The story in this is so cleverly constructed. There were a handful of surprises and twists that I never guessed. The performances were pitch perfect. They all had this level of sophistication and grace,that seemed like it would unravel at any second,but they somehow never managed to falter in the least bit. This entire film had that feeling. I loved the camerawork in this. It's has the "floaty" feeling that I love. There were so many wonderful editing techniques.The sequence where they show Mariette and Gaston in all the different mirrors and then their silhouettes is just an example of how technically outstanding this is. The ending,once again,impressed the hell out of me. I'm a clear lover of "The Lubitsch Touch".

As sophisticated as a sophisticated comedy can get. This is perhaps Lubitsch's greatest masterpiece. So smooth, charged with romance, and very, very funny.

Had me immediately become an fan of Ernst Lubitsch. Should also be required viewing for anyone thinking of doing a romantic comedy in the modern age. And, holy shit, is that THE Edward Everett Horton from Fractured Fairytales?

Fun and charming Lubitsch film about two grifters that try to steal from a young widow. You can definitely see the Lubitsch touch in this film. His films have a different feel than most comedies of the 30's. It's not just theme and style,but mainly how the actors carry themselves and interact with each other. I was really surprised how good Herbert Marshall was in this, and shocked he never had a bigger career. Miriam Hopkins is great as Marshall's cohort, and their relationship is original with great chemistry. Kay Francis really shines as a aloof and charming young widow. What makes this film different is that Marshall falls for both women and you want to see him with both. Lubitsch doesn't vilify any of the characters, but shows their short comings with great detail. Good film that is driven more by a great story and acting than comedy.
